Advantage "Polycarbonate"

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic resin it's strong, impact resistant & temperature resistant due to these properties, it is used for a variety of applications, from bulletproof windows to compact disks (CDs). The main advantage of this material over other types of plastic is its great strength combined with light weight.

Compact discs and Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs) are perhaps the most readily recognized examples of polycarbonate. The electronics industry also uses polycarbonate. It has been used to create transparent colored computer cases, for example, and many cell phones, and laptops also use it in their casings. This plastic nevertheless requires toxic chemicals in its production phase. It is, however, recyclable and environmentally preferable to PVC in applications for which either material can be used.

Clear polycarbonate is used to make eyeglasses because of its excellent transparency, durability, and high refractive index. This means that it bends light to a far greater degree than glass or other plastics of equal thickness. Since prescription lenses bend light to correct vision, polycarbonate lenses can be thinner than glass or conventional plastic, making it the ideal material for heavy prescriptions. These thin lenses correct poor vision without distorting the face or the size of the eyes, yet this extremely thin lens is virtual indestructible, an important safety factor for children and active adults.

In the current market scenario, it is great to see that Asia Pacific has been dominating the global polycarbonate market and the trend is expected to continue in to the forecast period. Demand for polycarbonate resins in Asia Pacific is mainly driven by the emerging economies of India and China, which constitute a major share of the demand in the region. Europe is expected to be the second largest market for polycarbonate resins for the next six years. Increasing demand from Middle East and South American countries is expected to drive the demand in the Rest of the World region. In the near future, there is going to be a substantial growth in the Rest of the World for Polycarbonate due to its application in various fields.

Some of the market players in the polycarbonate resins market include Mitsubishi Engineering-Plastics Corporation, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation, SABIC IP, Lg Chem, Bayer Material Science, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Teijin Ltd. and Styron among others.

Depending on the market segments, major geographies, and current market trends, I would say that the overall demand for US polycarbonate (PC) has been healthy and is expected to remain the same. Business begins picking up again in September and October remain that way through the third qua, despite the market heading into its typically slower season.

The prospect for the European Polycarbonate market is very much similar to what it was three months ago, that is, the markets favours the producers. Still benefiting from a more competitive exchange rate, they expect to continue to raise prices, as they are able to export more to Asia and face less stiff competition from that region in their own local market. Demand, especially from the thriving automotive industry, looks set to remain positive, at least in the near term.

The European region is expected to dominate this market with its growing demand for polycarbonate in different applications, especially the automotive, consumer electronics and sheet/films industries as it is an important hub for such markets. The European markets are estimated to register a rising growth in the coming years with the major industries expected to stabilize the overall business need in the respective regions.
