Polyvinyl chloride, commonly abbreviated PVC, is the third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, only next to polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC comes in two basic forms: RIGID (sometimes abbreviated as RPVC) and FLEXIBLE. The rigid form of PVC is used in construction for pipe and in profile applications such as doors and windows. It is also used for bottles, other non-food packaging, and cards (such as bank or membership cards). PVC is made from petroleum. The production process also uses sodium chloride. Recycled PVC is broken down into small chips, impurities removed, and the product refined to make pure white PVC. It can be recycled roughly seven times and has a lifespan of around 140 years.

According to the statistics, almost half of the world's polyvinyl chloride resin manufactured annually is used for producing pipes for municipal and industrial applications. In the water distribution market it accounts for 66% of the market in the US, and in sanitary sewer pipe applications, it accounts for 75%. Its light weight, low cost, and low maintenance make it attractive. However, it must be carefully installed and bedded to ensure longitudinal cracking and overbelling does not occur. Additionally, PVC pipes can be fused together using various solvent cements, or heat-fused (butt-fusion process, similar to joining HDPE pipe), creating permanent joints that are virtually impervious to leakage.

PVC is commonly used as the insulation on electrical cables; PVC used for this purpose needs to be plasticized. In a fire, PVC-coated wires can form hydrogen chloride fumes; the chlorine serves to scavenge free radicals and is the source of the material's fire retardance. While HCl fumes can also pose a health hazard in their own right, HCl dissolves in moisture and breaks down onto surfaces, particularly in areas where the air is cool enough to breathe, and is not available for inhalation. Frequently in applications where smoke is a major hazard (notably in tunnels and communal areas) PVC-free cable insulation is preferred, such as low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) insulation.

The two main application areas for single use medically approved PVC compounds are flexible containers and tubing: containers used for blood and blood components, for urine collection or for ostomy products and tubing used for blood taking and blood giving sets, catheters, heart-lung bypass sets, hemodialysis sets etc. In Europe the consumption of PVC for medical devices is approximately 85.000 tons every year. Almost one third of plastic based medical devices are made from PVC. The reasons for using flexible PVC in these applications for over 50 years are numerous and based on cost effectiveness linked to transparency, light weight, softness, tear strength, kink resistance, suitability for sterilization and biocompatibility.

Global Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period. Global production capacity, 37.3 million tonnes in 2014, is estimated to reach 50.27 million tonnes by 2020.

Europe dominates the market for PVC followed closely by Asia-Pacific. Consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the potential benefits of PVC; as a result South America and Asia Pacific regions are expected to increase its market share in the future.

Demand in developed countries like Japan has largely stabilized. More than 65% of global PVC demand stems from Asia Pacific region. China is driving majority of this demand. Hence, market in Asia Pacific is destined to drive the global business and it is consequently vital to engage this region in Europe's sustainability efforts, in order to enhance energy efficiency and promote industrial recycling.

PVC is used in a wide range of applications from packaging, catering products, consumer electronics, automotive, agriculture/horticulture to toys and textiles. PVC is largely used in pipes, windows, flooring, roofing, inflatable structures, and lighter structures. PVC contributes to the quality, cost-effectiveness, and safety of construction material and is the most widely used polymer used in the building & construction applications. Construction industry is a highly growing segment with remarkable growth trends around the globe, except Europe, due to economic downturns and maturity of manufacturing industry.

PVC consumption in India has grown over 10% per annum in the past years. The future  market trend show  a double-digit growth. Infrastructure and housing sector are key drivers for market growth. Government of India's 12th Plan projection for increasing manufacturing share in GDP from 18% to 25% is a huge pointer towards potential growth.

Also, the automotive industry is one of the most dynamic industries and is also among the major consumer segments of plastics. On an average, 150.0 kg of plastics is consumed for manufacturing a vehicle and out of which, nearly 10.0% is PVC based plastics. According to the industry experts, the use of every 100 kg of plastics, including PVC, can replace 200 to 300 kg of traditional material employed for automotive production and it has also got the potential to reduce fuel consumption by 750.0 liters over an average life span of a vehicle.

So, the growth of the construction and automotive industry is among the key contributors to significant demand growth of PVC. Additionally, medical device market is also among the key growth areas of PVC that is driving it at a considerable pace.

The overall conclusion is that, the market for recycled PVC and PVC scrap has a great growth potential in the future. PVC virgin or recycled is going to contribute in a big way to the society.
