In recent years prices for metal have been raising dramatically due to rapid industrialization in India and China. This hiking in price has now been taken into metal theft gradually. And it has now grown as a global problem. Often we able to see news about metal theft on net. The metal is stolen only for their intrinsic value ultimately for making new product by scrapped, recycling, etc.

Recently, a former City of Albuquerque employee has been arrested and accused for selling city owned scrap metal and pocketing 30 thousands of dollars. He used to work for the city’s traffic engineering department until the last year as a supervisor of the workers who installed traffic lights and signs. Gallegos had recycling companies at the city's pino yards by collecting the city’s scrap metal. . In turn, police say the companies would pay Gallegos directly while under the impression they were paying the city.

The city’s Audit and Investigation’s department says it counted 24 checks written to Gallegos for more than 37thousand dollars.

Gallegos, who’s currently an employee with the New Mexico Department of Transportation, was arrested at his Albuquerque office Friday.

Gallegos worked for the city for three years and resigned from his position last year.

In addition to that we are able to see that copper thefts are rising as well due to the tripled in price. In fact this raising in copper price is catching burglar’s eyes.  The police department has been taking several steps including the extract program that requires scrap metal dealers to report all transactions to investigators to stop this kind of metal theft.
