Wednesday, August 31, 2011 (11:58:02 AM : In earlierdays, sorting and separation processes of the scrap metals were done manuallyby the workers. They used to hand-inspect the scrap and then sort it one pieceat a time. But the disadvantage of this kind of sorting was that thedetermination of composition of the different alloys was not very accurate. So,there was a need for some innovative technology of sorting which poses greatbenefits like landfill reduction, pollution reduction, etc.
Accordingly, a recent development in the recyclingindustry is the invention of brand new sensitive sensor systems using advancedalgorithms and optoelectronics that permit the vivid identification of metalsby specific alloy type in just a matter of milliseconds. The new Spectra met® technology was integratedinto a continuous–feed conveyor system robust enough to be used in realsituations on dirty scrap and recyclable materials.
There are so many advantages of these advancedsystems.
- Up gradation of mixed non-ferrousmetal scraps to high value alloy production
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For example, recycling 1 ton ofaluminum saves the equivalent in energy of 2350 gallons of gasoline. This isequivalent to the amount of fuel needed to provide a typical home withelectricity for a period of 10 years
- Usage ofthis Spectra met technology can be used to reduce landfill wastes.
So,the truth is the sorting and separation methods which were worker-intensive withlack of technology and worth has now been transformed into atechnology-intensive, advanced and mechanical cum self-regulating process whichyields positive environmental impact to a great extent.
